Cloud forest Passiflora

Passiflora dioscoreifolia

Description:

An endemic species from Costa Rica, this is a short climber plant, from the cloud forest; (first time I see it). It did not have any fruit at the moment, assuming is small as the flower is just about 8 cm. the leave has similarities to a Dioscorea, a vain of a different family; Passifloras are well known for been host plants for many different species of butterflies, were they may lay the eggs and the caterpillars eventually will eat the leaves, something is not necessarily good for the plant; so as a defence, passifloras may produces nectar to attract ants and wasps that not only will feeds on the nectar but also the eggs of the butterflies. (notice 2 extra nectaries on the petiole, where they produces nectar)
