Bullet Ant

Paraponera clavata

Description:

Bullet Ant behavior is quite different from many species of ants in that they form only small colonies and are often seen as lone individuals, whereas many ant species are known for their large colonies. Their name derives from the intense pain from their sting that some people have described to be similar to being shot.

Habitat:

Wet lowlands in Central and South America.

Notes:

The sting of a Bullet Ant is considered to be the most painful of any arthropod. People should avoid coming in contact with these creatures.
