Midge (Willow Pine Cone Gall)

Rhabdophaga strobiloides

Description:

This gall (home of an insect) only appears on Willow shrubs. It is quite pretty and shaped like a small, tightly closed pine cone and only forms at the tips of branches (shown in the 3rd image). A small gnat, or midge just two tenths of an inch long is its maker. During winter itis a larva in the center of the gall. In spring it pupates and emerges as an adult. Interestingly the gall also hosts other parasites which use the gall for winter protection.
