thanks orbea, but I have the same problem with those links as the ones Argy cited. The galls shown there are all round, and the ones I saw were definitely much longer. I'll check with Joyce. Thanks...

Argy, I made a new spotting for the wooly ones and found a link to those galls found on that particular oak tree, but it's difficult. Neither the one you cite below, nor the one I found look exactly like the ones I spotted, they are more round. What to do in a situation like this re IDing?

They are not the same type as the first few but there is a woolly oak gall made by wasp Neuroterus exiguissimus. http://bugguide.net/node/view/296224
