Xylocopa sonorina
Black bee ~ 2 cm long and ~ 1 cm wide with four translucent bronze wings.
Suburban area on tropical upland plateau.
Spotted dead on a local sidewalk while taking my granddaughter out for a ride in her stroller. I collected the remains and later took close-up images of them. Uploaded are: 1. dorsal view; 2. ventral view; 3. close-up of the eyes and mouth; and 4. close-up of the top of the thorax (the shiny surface of which contains a reflection of overhead palm trees).
Thanks Jellis. I've revised the spotting to reflect the ID that you provided. The visual similarities between the images at the URL you cited and the bee I found were suggestive of a match. The fact that the link stated that Sonoran Carpenter bees are found in Hawaii was the clincher.
