Moved to pets. At Project Noah we strongly discourage taking any animal from the wild to keep as a pet. In many states it is in fact illegal to do so, & even where legal, it is extremely stressful for the animal concerned & living in captivity greatly reduces their quality of life. If you really want to keep a turtle as a pet, we would encourage you to buy a captive bred animal.

This is one of the musk turtles. Was it photographed in a nature center or in a home tank? Knowing if it's native to NC will help a lot in the ID process. Also, it should be moved to the Reptiles category when you have a moment. :-)
