Nymph of the Banded Assassin Bug

Pselliopus sp.

Description:

This is probably a first instar nymph of one of the Banded Assassin Bugs in the genus Pselliopus, Family Reduviidae. It was about 3 mm long and so small that I didn't even see that it was feeding on a small gnat until I saw the pictures.

Habitat:

On a bush in an open field, semi-urban area, outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

See a spotting of an older nymph (with wing pads already present) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/690... and the adult http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/169... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/203...
