The Ruddy Darter can attain a wingspan of 6 centimeters. Males are usually a bright red while females are a golden yellow color with black markings. The legs of Ruddy Darters are completely black, unlike the Common Darter.
The Ruddy Darter prefers quite waters with a temperate climate with vegetation such as reeds.
