Eastern Painted Turtle

Chrysemys picta picta

Description:

Small semi-aquatic turtle native to North America. Dark olive shell with yellow and red striping on face neck and legs. This turtle was rescued from the side of the road after being hit (presumptively) by a car. It was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center. While it was recovering well and would have been released, it had a rare reaction to the antibiotic it was receiving and did not survive. This was the first time this facility (which sees around 100 turtles a year for rehab) has ever seen a fatal reaction to this antibiotic as it tends to be well tolerated by the turtles.

Habitat:

Semi-suburban area with temperate woodlands and fresh water streams and ponds.

Notes:

The rehab center did contact a larger facility that rehabilitates over a thousand turtles a year and they did find that there have only been a couple of cases of a drug reaction to this particular antibiotic and it was in different types of turtles. Sad, but interesting to know.
