Ardea purpurea
Large heron almost a meter in height. Wingspan is about 150 cm. But very light in weight. Very harsh sounding call. Stands very still for a long time to catch it's prey.
Spotted in connection with a water bird census in paddy fields of a district in Kerala, India.
