This insect landed in the table at night while we were camping in an oak forest. About 25 mm (one inch). It has an uneven pattern.

You are right Argy Bee, I thought It was an assassin bug.

I think the truth is that BugGuide.net made the name up as they had nothing else. Nobody else has used that common name as far as I can tell. These damsel bugs are interesting in that they behave like assassins. You could call it 'False assassin" ? This is where I put the scientific name up top as well.

It's better than not having a common name at all, I guess. I noticed a few organisms without a common name.
