Macaca fuscata
The Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), is a terrestrial Old World monkey species native to Japan. It is also sometimes known as the snow monkey because it lives in areas where snow covers the ground for months each year — no primate, with the exception of humans, is more northern-living, nor lives in a colder climate. Individuals have brown-grey fur, red faces, and short tails. The macaque has some unusual behaviour, including bathing together in hot springs and rolling snowballs for fun.
Jigokudani Monkey Park is in Yamanouchi, Shimotakai District, Nagano Prefecture, Japan

Post your spottings to the Biodiversity of Central Japan please Rieko. Sudachi and Harum are the only ones keeping that mission alive! Harum is doing a really good job.
I am planning to go to Japan in that area this November :-)
Wow Ava, thanks for the fav on that. Where did you dig that up from? I posted it ages ago...
thanks Rieko, very interesting link...
thanks Daniele... When I opened it up this morning, there it was! Probably the internet was too slow!
I spent hours just watching them doing their thing in and around the hot springs. I love them also...
My fav seems recorded on my browser Pam :-) I really just love this species.
No Pam, "The Japanese macaque is native to the islands of Japan. Of the four main Japanese islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, Japanese macaques are found on all but Hokkaido...." Here is the website about Japanese Macaque: http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/e...

I know this face very well.
thanks for the fav Daniele, but it didn't record on the spotting! Strange! I'm sure I saw it on the home page last night...
