Have you noticed these when they are babies? early next spring, be on the look out for black small grasshoppers with either a red or yellow strip down thier back. that's how they start and will be come these critters by the end of summer.
I live in Jacksonville and we have a lot of them. my neighbor is on a crusade to massacre them because she is convinced they are not native. i'm still trying to educate her. :)
