Tetrio Sphinx

Pseudosphinx tetrio

Description:

Caterpillar approximately 4" long. Black with bands of yellow. Some feet are speckled; some are orange/brown. Speckled area behind red area on one end; speckled area on other.

Habitat:

Seen in a rocky area. Bushes were thorny.

Notes:

There were a lot of these caterpillars in this area both on the very large rock formations and the thorny bushes. This area is a beach area for a cruise line. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with caterpillar anatomy and really can't tell which end is which so I have not been able to note "head" and "tail" of this spotting.

Thanks for the id, bayucca! I checked this out in Encyclopedia of Life; now I'm wondering if there was a lack of leaves because these hungry critters ate them all.
