Eastern Chipmonk

Tamias striatus

Description:

Smallest animal of the squirrel family. Eastern chipmonks are one type out of 25 different types of chipmonks. It is the largest amongst all the types of chipmonks. It grows to about 11 inches and about 4 ounces. Their tails are up to 5 inches long. Their cheeks can stretch very big, larger than their heads.

Habitat:

Chipmunks make homes in burrows that have underground tunnel systems or they making nests in logs or bushes. They will gather nuts in their cheeks and store in their home for hibernation in the winter.

Notes:

They eat acorns and can find and hide up to 150 acorns a day. Chipmonks are omnivores, they eat vegetation, insects, baby birds, frogs and bird eggs. They store food in their cheeds and hide in their burrows. They hibernate during the winter but they eat the food they hid, they are not like bears that survive on their fat.
