Olive-ridley

Description:

Olive-ridleys face serious threats across their migratory route, habitat and nesting beaches, due to human activities,,,However, the most severe threat they face is the accidental killing of adult turtles through entanglement in trawl nets and gill nets due to uncontrolled fishing during their mating season around nesting beaches

yep karen , did report to local authorities ,they mentioned this as accident...and in India hunting endangered species carries stiff jail sentences..in chennai we have a group called turtle walk that talks about conservation in schools...so if someone had caused deliberate act of cruelty on this turtle they would have silently disposed this turtle into the sea....Here not all fishermen have TED...A turtle excluder device or TED is a specialized device that allows a captured sea turtle to escape when caught in a fisherman's net.... fishing boats called Catamarans (Kattumarams), sustain the bulk of over 2 million people dependent on the small sector (traditional) fisheries of the country....the days catch is dragged to coast never loaded on to the boat.....this method allows little room for the fishermen to rescue turtles or dolphins trapped in their nets....until conservation of turtle involves local fishing communities and the big players in fishing industry we will continue to lose turtles due to accidents....this turtle which had attracted scavengers like crow ,stray dogs by the time i photographed must have died by accident ..knot doesnt look like noose that killed it...no abrasions or injury in that region ...fishermen usually carry heavy catch on their shoulder by knoting them to poles ...

Hi Ashok, has this been reported to your local conservation groups? It does look like an act of deliberate cruelty rather than an accident.
I've removed it from the following missions as it is not appropriate for any of them - Schoolyard bioblitz, Signs of wildlife, Hunters & Animal food habits.
