wintergreen

Gaultheria procumbens

Description:

Pretty sure this is right. I found it off of Duck Brook Road in Acadia National Park, Maine. It's a ground cover -- no flowers or fruit at this time of year, December. I was hiking through bogs and with just a meter of elevation change, the land dried out and this wintergreen became the dominant ground cover under pine and oak forest.

Habitat:

Ground cover of open oak forest.
