Vulpes vulpes
The red fox is the largest of the true foxes and the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora, being distributed across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America and Asia The size of a small dog, the red fox is the largest member of the genus Vulpes and is well-known for its large bushy tail, which is often tipped with white. The fur is variable in colour, but is usually reddish-brown to flame-red above and white to black below; the lower limbs and the back of the ears are often black
This highly adaptable species is found in many habitats, from sand dunes to mountain tops. The red fox also occurs in urban areas, and seems to fare particularly well in affluent suburbs.
This female fox was rescued as a cub and is being rehabilitated before release back out into the wild in the Spring.
