Cardinalis cardinalis
This female is pale brown overall with reddish tinges in the wings, tail, and distinctive crest. Robust, red-orange bill. Body length is about 8 inches.
It is found in woodlands, parks, gardens, shrublands, and swamps. This one was bathing in a water batch near the edge of a deciduous forest in the midlands of South Carolina.
It is also known colloquially as the "redbird".
