Description:

This is not a real nettle but a member of the nightshade family; it is a perennial herbaceous plant, native to the southeastern United States that has spread widely throughout North America. The stem and undersides of larger leaf veins are covered with spines. It is pollinated by bumblebees and 32 insect species and meadow voles feed on this plant.
