Ya gotta LOVE Joe-Pye! I had some in my PA garden, and it grew to about 10 feet tall, no kidding! Simply covered with butterflies and bees in the summer. Quite a show-stopper.
If it has purple spots on the stems. It's E. maculatum. If not its probably E. purpurea.
