Striped Skunk

Mephitis mephitis

Description:

It is black except for a thin white stripe on the forehead and two longitudinal white stripes that fork from a white patch on the crown of the head and nape of the neck and continue along the upper sides to the rump. It measures up to 32 inches.

Habitat:

Striped skunks occur throughout Minnesota but are not common in the northeastern coniferous forests. It occupies a variety of habitats but is generally not common in forest or extensive lowlands where the water table is close to the surface. It favors fencerows which may support a high concentration of mice.

Notes:

Spotted near the swamp area of South Tamarac Lake along north Cotton Lake road. It was digging up worms and insects.
