Frangipani Caterpillar - Gusano Calacuche o Caracucha

Pseudosphinx tetrio

Description:

In Panama it is known as "Gusano Calacuche or de Caracucha", but it is actually a caterpillar. It has vivid colors. Its plant host is the Plumeria rubra. It is capable to eat all leaves in a few days; Then, it becomes a pupa. It can eat 2 times its own weight in 24 hours. The chrysalis or pupa, has strong or brown red color with black lines. The moth is pale brown with coarse Brown streaks. It lays between 50 and 100 eggs on the leaves, which hatch in three to five days and the caterpillars as soon as they hatch feed on the foliage for approximately 30 days. Their bright colors are to warn predators that they are toxic when eaten. And although they are not dangerous to humans if they are handled, they can bite to defend themselves because they feel in danger, but without causing damage, since they have strong jaws to be able to cut the leaves.
