Chrysididae family
small metallic turquoise wasp
I really do wish I'd gotten a better photo. I saw it again several times, but always too far away to get
They are pretty much worldwide and not restricted to desert - although they may favour the hotter, drier climates many can be in temperate regions. I lived in England for several years and they used to nest in holes in the brick walls of my house there (well actually parasitise the other wasps and bees that were nesting in those holes).
I do see. Wish I had a reference for them in my area - temperate rainforest instead of desert. Granted it has been hot and dry (for us) this year
It's a bit hard to see in the picture - but the pronotum (front segment of the thorax) is larger and more quadrate than in bees, and the parallel lines on the thorax (in the segment just behind the pronotum) are pretty typical for some chrysidids.
Compare it with the picture of the Chrysidids at the bottom of this page.
