Emydura krefftii
Pretty sure this is a Krefft's River Turtle. I couldn't find a good online resource, but my book Turtles of the World by Bonin et. al, identifies this species as being from northeastern coastal Australia in Queensland, and marked with a light area of cream or yellow behind the eye and extending to the tympanium... the plastron is black with yellow seems... the iris is black and surrounded by a yellow ring. Looks like a match to me.
Oh ok, so pretty big then. Like I said, I'm leaning towards Krefft's but I'm just not quite willing to call it. I'll check with my hubby and see what he thinks.
Sorry Shanna.. Before I could get another shot he was in the water! I will check the spot again to see if I can get another on! He was 25 - 30 cm long.
Nice turtle. I am not having much luck with an ID though... the shell looks too 'dome-shaped' for a Krefft's but I'm just not sure. How big was this guy? Did you take it from any other angles?
Cool turtle Christiane. Shanna's great for turtle ID. I think she mentioned Kreffts Turtle having the yellow stripe up the side, but I cant be sure. He's lovely!
What a nice looking turtle, very cool spotting. I'm not familiar with Australia's wild life to well but I'm sure someone will be able to ID, great photo.
