Eastern Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina carolina

Description:

I rescued this brightly colored box turtle out of the small fish pond under the deck where I live. At the time, there was no easy way to get out of the pond. I happened to go out on the upper deck and looked down. To my surprise, I saw a turtle in the pond. I was able to easily grab him out of the water and set him on the ground. He quickly walked into the woods nearby.

Habitat:

Suburban yard with woodland/marsh bordering.

Notes:

I have since added large rocks to one end of the fish pond so any other critters who may have fallen into the water can climb back out again. We have not seen any other animals trapped in the pond to this point (thank goodness).
