Latrodectus tredecimguttatus
The Mediterranean black widow, or malmignatta (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus) is a spider in the family Theridiidae. In Italian with a Mediterranean recluse spider I am one of the few species whose bite can create a serious threat to humans. Latrodectus tredicimguttatus is the relative homegrown American Latrodectus mactans black widow bite far more dangerous.
The malmignatta live in areas with low Mediterranean scrub, mostly arid and rocky, between rocks and walls; difficult it can be found in the vicinity of country houses, although easily adaptable to human environments especially if rarely visited as stables and barns. The species is present in the region that stretches from the Mediterranean to China. In Italy its presence is reported in the central and southern Tyrrhenian Italy (Liguria, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily); It was also found in Puglia and Sardinia.
