Wilson's Phalarope

Phalaropus tricolor

Description:

Phalaropes are sandpipers, but usually feed by swimming in tight circles and then picking at the surface of the water. Unlike most birds, the females are more boldly patterned and the males dull, because the males do the incubating of the eggs. The female Wilson's (shown here) has black and rusty stripes on the neck and a light crown.

Habitat:

This one was on a small farm pond.
