Tundra Swan

cygnus columbianus

Description:

The Tundra Swan is a small Holarctic swan. The two taxa within it are usually regarded as conspecific, but are also sometimes split into two species, Cygnus bewickii of the Palaearctic and the Whistling Swan, C. columbianus proper, of the Nearctic

Notes:

This was my second time to view Tundra Swans with both times being rare bird chases here in Texas. Tundra swans appear to be highly nomadic as of the last couple years traveling quite far south. In 2011 a large amount of records were documented spanning across central Texas to South Western Louisiana. These birds were photographed nearly 1/2 mile away with a Canon 7D, mounted to a 500mm F4 IS L, with 1.4x TC II all mounted on a Jobu Black Widow Gimbal with Manfrotto xProB legs. EFL = 1120mm f5.6

I like how it looks like you are hiding in the grass! Not a bad shot for all the crazy hardware you were using!
