Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

Largest of the North American herons with long legs, a sinuous neck, and thick, daggerlike bill. Head, chest, and wing plumes give a shaggy appearance. Great Blue Herons appear blue-gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye. This one had caught a small fish by its fin.

Habitat:

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, a haven for migratory birds and other wildlife, lies on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma, on the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas. The refuge is made up of water, marsh, and upland habitat. This one was in the one of the few ponds that still have water in our drought conditions.

Thank you. It kept working to get a better grip, so I had plenty of time to take a few photos.

Thanks Kelly. It was having a little difficulty keeping ahold and getting the fish into position to swallow. Too funny to watch :)
