Giant Plume Grass

Saccharum giganteum

Description:

Tall (3.5 - 10 ft) reedy-looking plant with a long head (1 ft) growing on a single stalk. Flowers are in a six to 18 inch plume.

Habitat:

Swamps, low woods, swales. This one was photographed in a damp area at the edge of an old pond at the Kathwood Ponds at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center.

Notes:

It's also called Sugarcane Plume Grass.
