Round-lobed Liverleaf

Hepatica americana

Description:

Hepatica americana is an early spring native wildflower. Small pink, lavender, or white flowers emerge in March from the leathery leaves of the previous year's growth, with new leaves arriving later. A common name, "Liver Leaf," refers to the shape of the leaves, as well as the burgundy-brown color.

Habitat:

This native wildflower lives in moist woodlands with partial shade. The flower is just opening on this one that was photographed at the Stevens Creek Heritage Preserve near Clarks Hill (McCormick County), SC.

Notes:

It's also called Round-lobed Hepatica. Early herbalists believed the plant would be effective in treating liver ailments.
