Fishhook Barrel Cactus

Ferocactus wislizeni

Habitat:

hot arid climates, gravelly or sandy soil, native to southwestern United States and northern Mexico deserts.

Notes:

The crown of mini yellow "pineapples" are the fruits. I was told they are called desperation fruit, as they are more tart/sour than Saguaro or Prickly Pear fruits, but they ripen after the other two types are gone, and so it is one of the only fruit choices left in the winter season. In the last pic you can see the "fishhooks" they are extremely tough.
