Apocynum Androsaemifolium
Dogbane (or Apocynum Androsaemifolium) is a flower that is 40 inches tall. Its smooth stems will produce milky sap when broken. The flower of the plant is a small, pink bell with 5 petals. It blooms from June to August. The fruit are paired, long, and very narrow pods with seeds on silky hair. The stems can be fatal to children if eaten because of their curiosity and small size. Also it is fatal to animals if it’s ingested. One reason it might be eaten is because it can be confused with milkweed (which is edible) It’s found in the U.S.A. and Canada except for 5 states.
Dogbane enjoys dry open areas and disturbed sites as well as along rivers and shady, moist areas with clay soils.
