Dobsonflies are large insects, around 5cm body length. This is a female with stout mandibles that can deliver a nice bite. Males have spectacularly large grasping mandibles that cannot be used for biting, probably used to hold female while mating. Adults are not known to feed. The aquatic larvae are called hellgrammite and take 2-3 years to develop.
