Tobacco hornworm/Tobacco Hawk Moth

Manduca sexta

Description:

Caterpillar was approximately four inches long. Pupated for 23 days, emerged as a female (?) Four inches in length, wingspan 4 3/4 inches.

Habitat:

Found on bell pepper plants stored in garage during a storm. It quickly moved to a tomato plant when given the opportunity.

Notes:

Due to a high number of bird predators on my property, I moved this larva (and two others) to a terrarium. I put tomato, wisteria, and the bell pepper foliage I found them on in the container; all three quickly switched to the tomato to feed. Two successfully pupated, one died as it began to transform. This moth was the first to emerge, the other was three days behind her.
