Carpinus carolinana
Peterson calls it ironwood; others call it American hornbeam, blue beech, etc. It's a tree with dense wood and a trunk that has an undulating surface usually described as muscular. I've been told that ironwood puts out more BTUs per pound than any other firewood.
Mixed deciduous forest.

I love the trunk, too. I find myself saying, "It's one of my favorites," about a lot of things here, but I really do have a special fondness for ironwood.
It love how the trunk looks so tough, I wonder if those BTU measurements took into account the ones emitted trying to chop it. :)
