Coconut Ant

Tapinoma sessile

Description:

Black arthropod about 2mm in length. Similar in size and anatomy to the little black ant, however the ants spotted emitted an odor when killed that smells of rotten coconut, which is where this species gets its name.

Habitat:

This ant and its coworkers were found under patio blocks in a temperate environment, next to a water fountain. Moist, temperate environments are what these ants prefer, but they can be highly adaptable. They are found all over North America, especially in the United States and Mexico.
