Sykes Monkey

Cercopithecus albogularis

Description:

Large monkey , dark grey at first impression with wide white collar around the neck. Back has a large olive green to rust patch. Face is distinctive with very round eyes, little button nose and a white 'moustache' running across the top of the mouth out to the cheeks. Eyebrows are also sort of grey white flecked and top of head is quite flat.

Habitat:

Seen in open coastal woodland and palm groves.

Notes:

A troupe of these monkeys were seen in the coast forest south of Dar, they spent most evenings eating the fresh shoots out of the top of the palm trees. sometimes venturing into the wooded area around the village looking for fruits etc. I have seen them other places around Tanzania where they are quite blase' about humans, but in this area they were quite shy.
