Double-bar Finches

Taeniopygia bichenovii

Description:

Small bird approx. 10cm tall, feeding of grass seed in Eucalypt savannah. Pic. 1 shows 2 juvenile birds (only one bar across the chest), Pic 2 & 3 show a family group. The juvenile birds have a strange feeding behaviour where they put one wing up while begging for food. It is thought they obscure the parents vision of other chicks increasing the amount of food received.
