Le Conte's Thistle?

Cirsium lecontei

Notes:

Occurs only in sandy, damp pineland soils and pine savannahs. Rare throughout its native range in the southeast US. This could be a Nuttall's thistle that has just been mowed too many times and stopped branching when flowering. If anyone can tell the difference let me know!
