Scarlet pimpernel

Anagallis arvensis

Description:

A smaller member of the primrose family, Primulaceae. The flowers, which open only in direct sunlight, are about 1/4 inch in diameter. The leaves are opposite and lack petioles. Scarlet pimpernel is introduced from Europe.

Habitat:

The scarlet pimpernel grows in sandy soil along roadsides, lawns and abandoned fields.

Notes:

Whether from the Leslie Howard movie or Daffy Duck, I've always wanted to see a scarlet pimpernel. ("They seek him here, they seek him there.") I finally did about ten years ago. A few years later, I took these pics.

Thank you, Olivia and Yuko. I never read the book, but I feel like I should now.
