Tropidacris cristata
huge, 4", check it out eating the screen of my cabin in pic #4
primary rainforest
When I first saw this giant grasshopper I was blown away. After staying in the Amazon for 12 days in the same general area, I ended up seeing a lot more of these. One time when I came back from a jungle trek, I found 2 of these eating the screen on my cabin. I was shocked! Here we were in the middle of the rainforest, with food everywhere and they were eating a window screen.
1 day I walked outside and saw this guy big and green on my door post stay there almost a half a day did not move
Thanks Rieko and Argy, yes, they must have strong teeth and a strong stomach!
Thanks Lauren and yes it really did make those holes in the screen, I couldn't believe it either!
Thanks bayucca. I found my previous ID at the Natural History Museum in Popayan. I wasn't sure if it was right but it looked like the grasshopper I saw, but I guess it wasn't. Thank Yuko, yeah, I could see that. Thanks Carol too.
Also called Tropidacris dux, which is actually Tropidacris cristata dux.

What a beautiful locust! Looks like a pilot from the old time (the helmet, glasses and scarf)!.
