A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Sylvilagus floridanus
The eastern cottontail can be identified by its large hind feet and ears. It can be 14-19 inches including a tail of about 2 inches. It can weigh 2-4 pounds, with members in the North weighing more. Males tend to be smaller than females. The fur on the cottontail grows more gray in the winter while gaining a reddish tint in the summer.
The eastern cottontail live in open grass fields with an abundance of vegetation. This fits their herbivorous diet. These organisms avoid dense forests. Though, they may be found in swamps and marshes.
