Bunias erucago L.

Description:

Bunias erucago is an annual or biennial plant growing to 0.6 m. It is flowering from May to August, and the seeds ripen from July to September. Its yellow hermaphrodite flowers and are pollinated by bees, flies, but more important this plant is also self-fertile.

Habitat:

Fields and roadsides, usually on rather poor soils, this one was spotted next to the rocky road. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers moist soil. It is distributed throughout whole south Europe (rarely can be found in Britain).

Notes:

Other names: Crested warty cabbage and Corn rocket. Leaves and young stems are consumed raw or cooked. Its characteristic aromatic flavor goes well with beans. The young and tender leaves are a typically used for making a refreshing spring soup while raw roots can be sliced thinly or grated and added to salads.
