Coenobita Purpureus
This hermit crab was about 3 inches long. You can see a hand for comparison. It had at least 6 claw-tipped legs and two antennae. It was using a snail shell for protection. When threatened, it would retreat back into its shell and draw its legs up, as in the second picture. The crab itself was a musty lavender color.
This was found on a sandy seashore near Batam, Indonesia, at about 5 o'clock in the evening.

Thanks! You won't believe how long it took to get the crab to extend its legs!
