Red-belted polypore

Fomitopsis pinicola

Description:

Flat, semi-circular fungus about ½ inch thick, 4 inches across its base and extending about 3 inches from the tree it which it was attached. It had a creamy white margin and base, a red center and an intermediate yellow concentric ring on its upper surface. There was as well a black mass extending vertically from the base of the shelf structure and attached to the tree.

Habitat:

Pacific Northwest coastal lowland forest.

Notes:

Spotted attached to a conifer tree between the Visitor Center and the Fort Clatsop reconstruction in Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.
