European bass

Description:

The sea bass measures up to 1.4 m in length, although its average size is about 80 cm. Its body is elongated, slightly compressed and slender. The head is large with an almost straight snout and the mouth, slit up to the eye, has thick, fleshy lips. It has two dorsal fins similar in size and somewhat separated, the anal fin is almost as long as the second dorsal fin and the caudal fin is slightly forked. The coloration is silvery with a grayish back with bluish or golden reflections. Presents a diffuse dark spot, sometimes well visible, on the upper part of the operculum. Bass can be found up to 100 m deep, although it is more common in shallow areas. It is a frequent fish on rocky bottoms, soft sandy or muddy bottoms and in underwater meadows. The juveniles present a gregarious character, forming small banks; adults are more solitary although they can gather together to hunt small schools of coastal fish such as squirrels, rowers and other sparids, etc. in a coordinated manner.
