Stilt Bug

Chinoneides tasmaniensis

Description:

A delicate long-bodied brown bug about 10 mm long (excl.legs). Legs were extremely long with bulbous distal ends of the femora. Antennae were almost twice the length of the body with a thickened mid region and tip. You can just see a flexed proboscis in Pic 4.

Habitat:

Spotted in a suburban garden. This species is described as having a Bassian distribution in Australia - occurs in Tasmania and coastal areas of NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

Notes:

Said to be a slow mover but this one was very active. These insects feed on various species of plants, especially hairy ones and are also seen to feed on insects, like aphids, that live on the host plants. This is the only species I could find that is distributed in these parts of Australia and I assume the ID is correct. Family: Berytidae
