Congrats Mac, your bizarre looking sawfly larva is spotting of the day! Sawfly larvae resemble caterpillars but adults look more like wasps and they are members of the same order, Hymenoptera.

It's probably important to know which plant this was on. Melaleuca ?? then maybe 'Lophyrotoma zonalis' http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/212... They change colours a lot from day to day.
